Planning Ancillary Product- Test shots for Digipak

Test Shots for Digipak

Today I decided to do some test shots at home in preparation for our photoshoot that was needed inorder for us to create our digipaks. As the original artist Jessie J is known for her brand image which consists of creative lip designs , we wanted to translate that brand image onto our artist Messie M. I decided to play around using different materials in ways to create different lip designs. I came up with the concept of using food to create designs to link in with the artist name. I felt I could incorporate the terminology 'Messy' to the Messie M's brand image.

As a group we decided on items , I could use to create lip designs. An idea came up about using sprinkles. I felt that this was effective as you could create different effects using sprinkles and sprinkles come in numerous colours and designs.  I then went of to obtain some sprinkles.
For the sprinkles to stick onto my lips I had to think of something that would hold the sprinkles together, I then came up with the idea of using lipgloss to allow the sprinkles to stick onto my lips.
Below shows a collage of some images I took of using different sprinkles to create different lip designs on my lips.
To create this lip effect , I used white sprinkles to create a frost effect on my lips.

Photoshoot Behind The Scenes

Today we had a photoshoot.... well something similar to that. We didnt have much locations but we were sure that we wanted to film in front of a white wall. We found a place on the lower ground of the college and we took pictures there. Then we went outside and took really good pictures out there. I decided to start filming the behind the scenes so that you could see what we got up to.
I forgot to film the stuff that we did inside.

1st up just a couple of pictures of stylist Chau putting fake lashes on Michaela.  Then after that a few pics from outside in the park field whatever.

This is the Prototype of My Album Cover

On mondays lesson it felt like an arts and crafts session cutting and sticking blah blah, but it was fun. We were bascially making our prototype album covers. Here is what i got up to.

The colour scheme as you can see is purple black and white. This is not exactly how my album is going to look like but i can tell that the colours will work well together. We just need a font to match.

Planning Ancillary Products - Elements that will be added within my Digipak

Planning for the Real Digipak

We were given a task to plan for our  Album Digipak and this is what we came up with. This is the group section of the planning i will soon start planning individually for the album cover.

Planning Ancillary Products - Do's and Don'ts for Design Work

When creating our ancillary products we have to encounter the following Do's and Don'ts on what should/should not be included on both the digipaks and advertisements. In today's lesson, we were told the follow Do's and Don'ts that would make our ancillary products look either strong or weak.

DO'S
  • Make it look attractive and eye catching to the audience
  • use clear images
  • use good sized images
  • Ensure the image used relate to the artist / album name
  • make sure that the colour scheme is consistent throughout the design on both the digipaks and the advertisements. A max of 3 colours should be used.
  • make sure that your design is creative / stands out from the rest
  • ensure there is a clear layout used
  • ensure that there is enough space for images and font
  • following genre conventions when placing font
  • use appropriate industry logo's and conventions, the barcode, copyright, album title, artist name, and for the advertisement the release date of the album
  • ensure the artist face is visible

 DON'TS
  • use various images
  • use various fonts that are not clear
  • use various font sizes
  • stretch images or use unclear images
  • use too much colour
  • make it hard for your audience to find information
  • use text/ font / images that don't relate to your genre
  • use unnecessary effects
  • place font in front of the artist face

Planning for the digipak

Today in class, we were given a task to plan our digipak. Our group came with several ideas of what to put on the digipak.

Further analysis to be added. (pictures will be included too)

Planning Ancillary Products - Mock Up for Messie M Digipak

Mock up for Messie M Digipak
In todays lesson we had to produce a mock up of the front and back panel of our digipak. Either though as a group we brainstormed and dicussed the colour scheme, created a tracklist , name of the album and the fonts we will use for the digipak , independently , we have to create seperate digipaks for our artist 'Messie M'.

The features that will be contained on my digipak will include the followiung:

THE FRONT PANEL:
-Image of the Artist 'Messie M' that will take majority of the space on the front panel.
-The left side of the panel will have the album name written downwards ' KNOCK ME DOWN' the effect of this will enthausize the effect of the word down all the word written downwards. On the right side panel will have the remaining album title 'BUILD ME UP' which will be writtten the opposite direction. The effect of this will show the meaning build me up. The album title will be written in a simple font , in capital letters , in the colour white so it pops against the artist image.
- The artist name will be written under the artist image in a fancy font similiar to the font used for Jessie J's digipak. The font will be written in a purple to stand out.

THE BACK PANEL
- The traacklist will be positioned in the middle of the back panel
-Another image of the artist will be used and positioned to the left side of the back panel
- An image that relates to one of the artists songs will be added , I decided to incoporate dominoes on the digipak as Dominoes is Messie M's hit single.
- The bottom of the back panel will contain the copyright information regarding the digipak , Logos of record labels associated with the artist ( this will be Island records) also , a barcode will be positioned at the bottom aswel.

THE SIDE PANEL
- Both the Artist name and the Album title will be poisitoned across. The same font used for the artist name and album title will be used again for the middle panel.
- The background colour for the Side panel will be black , which will allow the colours of the two fonts to stand out against the dark background.

This is a digital photo taken of the rough mock up for my 'Messie M' digipak. As you can see it has been labelled in detail of all the features that will be found on the digipak.

CALVIN HARRIS ANALYSIS

Analysing Previous Years Digipak

This digipak is good because the title really stands out so its the first thing that people see when they look at it.
The colours are really effective and match each other really well.
From the colour i would think that this album was associated with love so i think it indicates a clear genre.
The use of space is really good because the title is in the centre and the track list is in the centre so all the space is used effectively.
The text size on the back could be a little bigger because it is white so it would be harder to see.

This digipak isn't good because the colours clash with the overall background which is grey.
The panels link in some way because each panel has a musical instrument in it.
The genre is clear that it is an indie
band. This is made clear because of the instruments and the colours used.
The use of font was good but the colour made it look bad.

This digipak is really good and i think the best out of the ones i have commented on.
The colours used are really effective in showing us what kind of genre the music will be.
The artists name is big and clear for people to see.
The use of font is also very effective in showing us what the album genre is.
All the panels link in really well with each other.
The use of space was effectively used the artist takes up much of the space.

Researching Ancillary Products - Analysing previous years Digipaks

Analysis Previous years Digipaks
In today's lesson we took a look at some digipaks created by the previous year. We had to analysis a few.

Strengths
  • The artists brand image was the colour scheme used throughout the digipak. I feel that it is effective as they use the same template of colours.
  • The image of the group is clear , good sized , positioned well.
  • The colours used link in the genre of the artists
  • the font used is at a good size
Weaknesses
  •  Don't really feel it looks effective seeing the shadows of the artists in the image chosen.
  • Feel they look quite serious , feel a better photo could of been chosen
  • Don't really like the design added at the bottom of the front panel
  • Don't really feel the font links in to the gender of the artists , don't really like the font chosen
  • Don't feel the front panel reflects a femininity
Strengths
  •  The images used of the artist translate different emotions of the artist and like the fact she looks different in all three.
  • Like the old vintage style to the digipak.
  • Simple colours used which makes it look effective.
  • The use of the black and white font stands out in contrast to artist images.
  • Font used is clear , neat and readable
  • Like the simpliscity of the Digipak
  • Like the fact they left one panel clear of an image of an artist
  • The genre of the artist is revealed.
  • Weaknesses
  •  They could of chose a brighter colour in contrast to the colour brown used
  • Also, some text could of been included on the image used for the inside panel
Overall I like the simplicity of the digipak , feel that it is easy to read , neat , everythings positioned well. I like the old , vintage feel to it. Have to say it is my favourite out of all 4 digipaks.
Strength and Weaknesses

Looking at this digipak, I like the use of the grey scale images , but feel that the blue and red font used doesn't make it look effective and take away the simplicity away from the album cover. Also, i feel the red and the blue makes it look to loud and busy. In addition, the images used overlay against one another for example: the barcode and the record labels logo is positioned on top of the radio image.I also felt the circle image does not look effective as the colours used does not match the colours seen on the blue guitar. I feel the music notes use look a bit cheesy and are just scattered everywhere. Also the guitar image looks stretched out and doesn't look effective or in proportion. I think the 3 grey scale images link well together. The genre is made significant through the images of the music instruments.

Overall if they made several changes , I feel that it could be quite a good Digipak, but the way it looks makes it look quite tacky and at a weak level

Strengths
  •  use of colours link to the identity of the Artist ( use of pink)
  •  use of pink is used as a glow effect for the pictures and used for the main titles on the CD cover.
  • A nice sized image used to show the artist
  •  Image is clear and is positioned to the right to allow space for the title
  • All four images use relate to the album
  • The same font type is used throughout the Digipak , but through different effects , showing variation ie . The Artist name is highlighted in Pink to make it stand out
  • Name of album is seen within the inside of the digipak
  • The genre is made clear
Weaknesses
  •  I don't really like the image used on the back panel of the digipak. I feel that the effect used doesn't make the image look clear and distorts the image.
  • Also I feel she could of left one panel clear without repeatedly using her image throughout the entire digipak.
  • I also feel the front and inside panel is stronger than the back panel.
Overall its an effective digipak that plays around with the colour pink to add fun , feminine feel to the album. I feel that it is a good digipak was made at a good standard. In my opinion some people will feel that there is no faults with it and think it is quite good , where others will find that there are some features that let it down.

Analysis: Previous student digipaks

Further analysis to be added soon.

Researching Ancillary Products - Looking in the inside of Digipaks

Inside of Digipaks
I decided to take a look inside various digipaks to look at some of the features generally included.
I decided to take a look inside the Pixie Lott album. In the inside panel of her album , I noticed that on top of her CD included the following features:
  1. Pixie's signature style font ( the letter 'X' used).
  2. Tracklist of the Pixies songs featured on the album
  3. Copyright Information
  4. Logos of the record labels associated with Pixie.
Pixie uses bright red for her CD panel which contrasts against the silver font. The colours used translate throughout the rest of her digipak. I felt that it was different that the inside panel of the digipak contained the tracklist. Usually the tracklist is positioned at the back panel of the album. I felt the 'X' taken from Pixie's name , was a creative element to add. The use of the 'X' gives split meanings. 1 meaning could be a x meaning a kiss , showing love to her fans , the other meaning is the 'X' relating it back to her name.
This photo is off the front panel of the Pixie Lott album. You can see that the style of the 'X' featured in her name is the same 'X' used for the inside of her digipak. This shows that the design of the her digipak is continues. It also identifies that its copyrighted as it has her signature font type.

Lily Allen uses the same design featured on the front panel of her album. The features included within the inside panel include the artist name , name of album and logos of record labels associated with the artist. The design used for Lily's digipak is a futuristic , comical design which is followed through in the inside of the digipak. Her name is designed using a comical font , this font used is generally seen with superhero comic strips. It reminds me of the font used in a batman comic. The inside gives a sharp , edgy feel as it uses a black and white colour scheme which makes it pop out. The font looks 3D which is quite creative.
This photo is off the front panel of Lily Allen's digipak. As you can see the font used for her name is the same font carried over inside the digipak.

The inside of Kate Nash digipak is in the design of a collage of different images of the artist and items associated with the artist in an effective way. The creativity used throughout Kate's digipak is followed through to the inside of her digipak. She maintains the colours used on the front panel of her digipak and maintains the same effect used. The features include the artist name , name of the album , artist image and copyright information. I thought it was quite different seeing the image of the artist on top of the CD aswel as seeing the copyright information.
This photo is off the front panel of Kate Nash's digipak. As you can see the design and colour scheme is carried over inside the digipak.

Cinema Visit?

No, I did not go to the cinema to watch the music videos due to certain reasons.

ANALYSING PREVIOUS DIGIPAK'S

We looked at previous students digipaks to help us get an idea of what to include and looked at the strengths and weaknesses to get an idea of what does and doesn't work well on a digipak.

-in this digipak the colours go well with each other
