Looking at Media Language
As a class we analysed and looked at the media language within two music videos. Media Language consists of looking at :
- Camerawork- To see if the music contained edits which consisted of Jump Cuts, Slow Motion and obvious edits.
- We also had to look at the movement of the camera and see if it correlated in time with the music.
- We also had to see if the Artist made any eye contact with the Camera.
- If any repeated shots of the artist/performers occurred.
- The use of base track
Wretch 32 Feat Example -' Unorthodox'
In the Video ' Unothodox' we concluded that there was a number of 26 jump cuts that were used throughout the chorus to illustrate the different actions happening within the song. As the audience we had to concentrate on the different actions taken place in-order to keep a count on the different actions we could see. The affect of the change of actions happening within the song , allows the audience to follow the story-line of the what is happening within the song if there is a story-line happening. It also breaks up the narrative from seeing the actions of the artist himself and focuses on the different actors within the video. A slow motion effect is added at 0:08-0:13 of the video which shows Wretch facing backwards looking out towards the scenery of the urban buildings within London. The use of the extreme long shot of Wretch looking out to the scenery is effective as we able to see the location aswel as Wretch himself.
This screen shot illustrates the extreme long shot used within the video.
Additionally within the video , we could see both Wretch and Example making a lot of eye contact to both the camera and the audience making it seem that the artist themselves are in -fact talking to us.
Mark Ronson + The Business International -' The Bike Song'
In Mark Ronsons's ' The Bike Song' a jump cut is used to illustrate a thief stealing one of the business international guys bike and the thief riding the bike uncontrollable. The use of the jump cuts illustrate the different actions of the thief and illustrates the different facial expressions seen on the thief's face when riding the bike. As the camera is moving in time with the music , we collective concluded that there were 15 edits seen within the space of 2 seconds ,illustrating when one of the business international guys making contact with the bike. The action taken place is accompanied by a drum roll which illustrates the action moving in time with the beat. At 3:35-3:49 a slow motion effect is used when all 3 of the business international members are seen looking at the girls. The effect of this is used to emphasis the mood when a guy notices a pretty girl and the pace slows down to take in the moment.
