Location Hunting

On wednesday we looked for potential locations for our music video. The main things we were looking for was empty quiet places. We didnt want it to be too busy becasue we are trying the desaturation technique so if we were in a busy area there would be too many colours so the desaturation techniue would be useless for us.
We havent decided yet on a fixed location but we have considered some places like

Camden
The Barbican
Angel

We still need to think of more places and the times we are going to film becasue a certain time the streets might not be as busy as it might be in lets say the afternoon.

Media Language

We were given a task in class to watch two music videos and try and find the following things:

Jumps Cuts
Slow Motion
Obvious Edits
Camera Moving in time with music
Artist making eye contact with the camera
Repeated shots of the artist
Use of back track
Editing in time with the beat of the song.

Here are the two videos we watch the first one is Mark Ronson and The Business Intl and the second one is Wretch 32 ft Example.

Previous Year's Music Video

We looked at other students music videos and discussed what was good about them and how they could have improved. We got a lot of inspiration from watching thier videos and there were new techniques that we had learned also i found out about the fish eye technique from a music video i saw it was really good and effective but i dont think it would work for out music video.

Studying Music Videos

We looked at how different genres of music affect how the music video will look like
We watched Cee Lo Greens Video F*** you. It is very diffrent from other music videos becasue it has a structured story to it. Its a funky energetic song so of course the music video has to match. So in the music video there are bright colours and and shiny clothes.

Todorov/Propp Theory

In class we looked at T&Ps theory of films, and concluded that music videos did not follow this structure but it did have elements of it.

A state of equilibrum at the outset
A disruption of equilibrium by some action
A recongnition that there has been disruption
An attempt to repair the disruption
A reinstatement of equilibrium.

You would mostly see this structure in dramas like Eastenders but i think elements of this fit in with music videos. Hers how i think it relates:

In a music video there is a state of equilibrum at the outset
Then a disruption of the equilibrum by some action
An attempt to repair the disruption
Then it can either be fixed or not

The Music Industry

The music industry is changing rapidly. Its changing by the way we buy music by the way we watch music videos even how music is distributed.

Back in the day you would have to go to the recording studio to create music ( some artists still do this) but now you can upload videos of yourself singing onto online social networking sites like facebook, twitter youtube etc (mainly youtube).

For people to know about your music back then it would be on billboards or on music channels like MTV. Now you can post it online and hope that it becomes viral.

For music to e bought you would have to go to the vinyl shop or a music store and buy the music physically (some people still do this; just less than before) now you can buy it from itunes or download it for free. Which sadly alot of people are doing today that is why the music industry is struggling.

Some companies have come up with many ideas to make people buy music instead of getting it for free. Like a special edition which could include extra tracks free poster etc.

Radiohead came up with a new idea called the honesty box. Which meant that people payed the amount that they thought the music deserved. But i dont think this is a good idea because people could pay 1p and say at least i payed for it. But thats just like getting the music for free so Radiohead arent making much of a profit from this 'honesty box'.

The lyrics

To be able to plan a music video for the song we had to listen and read the lyrics carefully so that we could think of a video to relate to it so here it is.

Domino Lyrics.
I'm feeling sexy and free
Like glitter's raining on me
You like a shot of pure gold
I think I'm 'bout to explode

I can taste the tension like a cloud of smoke in the air
Now I'm breathing like I'm running cause you're taking me there
Don't you know...you spin me out of control

Ooh ooh ooh

[Chorus]
We can do this all night
Turn this club, skin tight
Baby come on
Pull me like a bass drum
Sparkin' up a rhythm
Baby, come on!
Ooh ooh ooh ooh
Rock my world into the sunlight
Make this dream the best I've ever known
Dirty dancing in the moonlight
Take me down like I'm a domino

Every second is a highlight
When we touch don't ever let me go
Dirty dancing in the moonlight
Take me down like I'm a domino

[Jessie J]
You got me loosing my mind
My heart beats out of time
I'm seeing Hollywood stars
You stroke me like a guitar

I can taste the tension like a cloud of smoke in the air
Now I'm breathing like I'm running cause you're taking me there
Don't you know...you spin me out of control
Ooh ooh ooh

[Chorus]
We can do this all night
Turn this club, skin tight
Baby come on
Pull me like a bass drum
Sparkin' up a rhythm
Baby, come on!

Ooh ooh ooh ooh

Rock my world into the sunlight
Make this dream the best I've ever known
Dirty dancing in the moonlight
Take me down like I'm a domino

Every second is a highlight
When we touch don't ever let me go
Dirty dancing in the moonlight
Take me down like I'm a domino

[Bridge]
Ooh baby baby got me feeling so right
Ooh baby baby dancing in the moonlight
Ooh baby baby got me feeling so right
Ooh baby baby dancing in the moonlight
Ooh baby baby got me feeling so right
Ooh baby baby dancing in the moonlight

[Outro]
Rock my world into the sunlight
Make this dream the best I've ever known
Dirty dancing in the moonlight
Take me down like I'm a domino

Every second is a highlight
When we touch don't ever let me go
Dirty dancing in the moonlight
Take me down like I'm a domino
