Laura Mulvey
Representation consists many elements such as: gender, age, ethnicity, religion, place etc..
Laura Mulvey theory illustrates the representation between both men and women in music videos. She quoted that :
" In a world ordered by sexual imbalance , pleasure in looking has been split between active/male and passive/ female. The determining male gaze projects its fantasy onto female figure which is styled accordingly."
My Interpretation and understanding of Mulvey's theory is that:
" In today's modern day society, there is a sexual imbalance between men and women in the way people look at you. Male more fantasize and gaze hard at women, judging women by the way that they are dressed and this therefore portrays women as sexual icons."
Dizzee Rascal- 'Holiday'
50 Cent's - Candy Shop video illustrates again dismemberment as throughout the video, women are seen wearing skimpy dresses and lingerie which illustrates to us that women are seen as sexual icons and objects to men. In contrast we see 50 dressed up in full clothing which indicates that he is in control of the subject matter. The song is seen through a man's point of view as 50 is the only male seen within the video and he drives the narrative of the song. Within the video we hear 50's voice throughout the song aswel as Olivia's voice during the chorus. The effect of hearing both 50's and Olivia's voice illustrates the message of the song through both a man and woman's perspective. Throughout the video we see elements of objects that suggest sex ie. whips , sex costumes , the use of the girl pouring chocolate on an another girl seen at 2.47 -2.49 and the use of a bed. The effect of these elements use reinforces the man's fantasy idea about sex and a man's view on a women. Through some of 50's lyrics within the song reinforces the idea about sex. Such phrases such as ' I got the magic stick, i'm the love doctor' illustrates this idea.
Beyonce's- 'Run the world' video in some ways follows Mulvey's theory but in a different way. The women alongside Beyonce are seen wearing suspenders, bras, leotards alongside other elements of clothing. The girls within the video reveal some skin ie. legs, stomach etc... but are not revealed so explicitly in comparison to the girls seen with both the 'Holiday' or 'Candy Shop' video. Throughout the video we hear Beyonce's voice that shows that she drives the narrative of the song and the song is seen through the eyes of a woman. The title of the song being ' Run the World ( Girls)' illustrates that woman are seen as superior and powerful to men. You could also argue and say that the phrase ' Run the World' could also illustrate that without women, men would not exist. Also , stating that women have rights too. Within the video we see men dressed up and are seen holding defensive weapons which are used to protect themselves.
The effect of this illustrates men trying to maintain and protect their power from the girls.
The screen shot below illustrates this statement.
"Who are we , what do we run , we run the world."
The use of this phrase illustrates a political message to women everywhere stating men are not the only one's in control , women have power too and are not only seen as sexual icons which women are usually presented as within most music videos.
Dizzee Rascal- 'Holiday'
In Dizzee Rascal's -' Holiday' video, dismemberment is illustrated through the view of men , as within the video , women are seen as just seen as a piece of item ie women are seen as just legs and body. Throughout this video, we witness all the girls wearing bikinis which illustrates to us that women are seen as sexual icons. In contrast the men within the video are all dressed up and not showing skin what so ever which gives a double standard message within the song indicating men are in control more superior to women. Between 0:35- 0:48 we see Goldie eyeing up a women as she enters the party wearing a bikini. This indicates to me that woman are only seen as an object for men to look at . Throughout the whole video, we never hear a female voice. Dizzee's voice drives the whole of the song illustrating to us that it is a male dominated song, also showing that woman do not have a voice or a say. This also shows us that we watching the video through the eyes of a male It is also argues that this video stereo typically illustrates the conventions usual seen withing rap , hip- hop , pop videos
