Andrew Goodwin
Andrew Goodwin believes that traditional narrative analyses, opposes Todorov ideas on narrative and doesn't really apply to pop videos. He believes that pop videos rely on repetition and often within the video , images are repeated the same way in-which the song repeats choruses or lines.
The repetition of song forms intertextuality between parts or rhythms of other songs which enables us to become familiar with the genre of song and have certain expectations of song judging it by its genre. The song will become more familiar to the audience through hearing it through the radio , watching it on TV and hearing the song in advertisements for films or TV programs.
Goodwin believes that there are three types of relations between songs and videos, such as:
1. ILLUSTRATION- This where the video tells the story of the lyrics.
An example of a video that illustrates this is- Kelly Rowland 'Stole'
The song and video both correlates to one another as it illustrates to the audience that you shouldn't take your life for granted as your life could be stolen from you within an instance. The actions occurring within the video expresses the feelings/moods within the song.
2.AMPLIFICATION- Occurs when the videos introduce meanings that do not contradict with the lyrics but add layers of meaning.
An example of a video that illustrates this is- Kelis 'Milkshake'
As new meaning is introduced ,in the term of the phrase ' Milkshake' , which doesn't contradict with the lyrics of the song. ' Milkshake' referring to the drink itself and ' MILKSHAKE' referring to Kelis accents.
3.DISJUNCTURE- This is where there is little connection between the lyric and video or where the video contradicts the lyrics.
An example of a video that illustrates this is - Michael Jackson's 'Man in the Mirror'.
The song and the video share no comparisons to one another as the song is about self-realization ,but the video is full of radical world events.
